International Women’s Day – Zero Tolerance for VAWG

One in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in her life.

Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is happening everywhere in the world, regardless of the socio-economic situation, ethnicity, age or origin. Despite some significant progress in terms of legislation, notably against domestic violence in the huge majority of cases, VAWG remains a punish-free crime.

This violence has been proven to have significant impacts on women’s physical and mental health and the health and wellbeing of their children. VAWG is not only a violation of fundamental human right to security; it is also a persistent and universal health pandemic that negatively affects the social and economic development of the countries. Tackling VAWG is a fundamental stage towards eradicating poverty and building peace.

EuroMed Feminist Initiative (EFI) addresses VAWG in all its forms as the most spread and fierce expression of male domination and control over women: from violence at home to political exclusion and economic discrimination, to cyberbullying and blaming the victims for this violence. We are relentlessly challenging the gender power structures and fighting discrimination and oppression of women in order to bring about positive changes for the whole society.

EuroMed Feminist Initiative advocates for strengthening women’s autonomy and self-determination, voice, action and power by supporting and creating safe spaces across the socio-political borders to build common analyses beyond the differences of contexts. For almost two decades, EFI has been acting for the development of a cross-cultural feminist discourse based on the universality of women’s rights and strives to integrate it into the diverse components of the democratic and social movements and policy making.

On International Women’s Day, as part of its “Zero Tolerance for VAWG” campaign, EuroMed Feminist Initiative joins the women´s rights movement to call on all law makers and political decision makers to take part in ending all forms of VAWG, and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular Goal 5, via ensuring equal access to work and equal payment, equal economic rights, access to property and resources, equal access to political rights and representation, equal access to education, guaranteeing sexual and reproductive rights, strengthening legal protection, providing better medical care and prevention for victims.

Together we can create a future with #ZeroToleranceforVAWG.
